Simon Cowell Supports One Direction Members Going Solo But Wishes They All Stayed Loyal: 'One Flew Out of the Nest'

Simon Cowell is fully supportive of the One Direction boys going solo, but after helping launch the singers into superstardom, the X Factor and America’s Got Talent judge also wishes they would all stay close by.

“I think they’re all gonna do great,” he told PEOPLE Tuesday night about Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson on the red carpet at an America’s Got Talent taping. “I worked with these guys for six years, so I always hoped they would all stay within what I call the Sony family, but I think only one won’t.”

Noting that Payne recently signed a solo deal with Universal Music (One Direction is signed with Cowell’s Syco Music, which is owned by Sony), Cowell added that Horan may also soon ink a solo deal.

Noting that Payne recently signed a solo deal with Universal Music (One Direction is signed with Cowell’s Syco Music, which is owned by Sony), Cowell added that Horan may also soon ink a solo deal.

“Niall is the most loyal,” he said. “We are expecting to announce something soon with him. I’ve always known he’s loyal.”

While Cowell also “always knew” the boys would try creating successful careers outside of One Direction, he had hoped “that everyone would do it with us, but one flew out of the nest.”

After the singers announced they would be taking a hiatus last year, Cowell acknowledged the singers had “100 percent” been overworked since being discovered on The X Factor in 2010.

“Even though they were young, that was a grueling schedule, and after a while I could see they were exhausted,” he said at the time. “Having a year off is going to be a healthy thing.”

Horan’s fledgling solo career may get a helping hand from fellow British music titan, John Newman. The “Olé” singer told PEOPLE that he’s ear-marking some of his new compositions for Horan. “I was having a text back and forth with Niall Horan the other night about some ideas, which is cool.”

Liam Payne signs solo deal with management company

Liam Payne has teamed up with a management company as his solo career begins to take off.

The singer has signed up with Doyen Global, who are launching their first music division.

The company have a strong history in sport and represent the likes of footballers David Beckham and Neymar.

They wrote on Instagram today (July 26): “We are pleased to announce the launch of our new music division at @doyenglobal & welcome @fakeliampayne to our family.

Excited to be working together.”

Payne recently became the first member of One Direction to sign a solo deal as he teamed up with Capitol.

BBC: Did Simon Cowell ignore Liam Payne from One Direction on purpose?

It may just have been a slip of the tongue, but Simon Cowell missed out mentioning Liam Payne while talking about the One Direction solo albums.

Speaking at an America’s Got Talent press conference, he was asked what he thought about Louis’ songs.

“We’re in touch with them,” he said.

“The great thing about all these boys - well not all of them but most of them - they are incredibly loyal and you don’t always expect that. Niall, Harry, Louis - amazing.”

Simon missed Liam’s name out while talking about Louis’ transition from pop star to judge on America’s Got Talent.

He’s also revealed that he’s in talks with the other band members to appear on the show.

“Louis is great,” he said. “It was so funny and so, kind of odd, because he had auditioned for me five years ago and now he’s sitting where I’m sitting, judging other people and doing it well.

"I was really happy for him. He loved doing it.”

One of the reasons Simon may have left Liam out of his statement could be that he’s signed with a label other than his.

“Happy to have signed to @CapitolUK. They have an amazing history of artists, I hope I can follow in their footsteps.” - Liam, July 21st 2016

Just in case you didn’t know, Simon’s Syco is part of the Sony record label, while Capitol is part of Universal.

But he could just be talking about Zayn and his departure from the band.

With One Direction On Hiatus, This Is The Perfect Time For New Boy Bands

lifechangeing:

By Hugh McIntyre, July 22, 2016 @ 09:10AM EST

After wrapping their On The Road Again tour late in 2015, the four remaining members of One Direction hung up their hats, at least for the time being. It’s hard to deny that the boys, who originally met on The X Factor and who have been busy conquering the world ever since, don’t deserve a bit of a break after the years they’ve had. The only chart-topping boy band left in the world is now officially on hiatus, which leaves that market completely up for grabs…and yet at the moment, there doesn’t seem to be anyone there to try and claim 1D’s spot.

It’s difficult to believe that record labels, managers, and anyone else with the resources to put together a male singing group wouldn’t be salivating to create the next One Direction, and for good reason. There have been many boy bands that have come and gone, and many never even leave a mark, but when lightning strikes and it all goes right, the rewards can be unbelievable.

In the few years they were together, One Direction became one of the most successful acts in history, no matter how you look at it. The group released five albums, all of which topped the charts in countries all around the world, and each and every one ended up on year-end most popular lists in some of the most important global markets. Their many singles sold millions of copies (even in today’s music economy), their merchandise flew off store shelves, and even their theatrically-released concert films brought in dough, and all of this doesn’t even include the concerts, which is where the real money is these days. 1D’s four headlining tours were all massively popular, and every night added brought in more and more cash.

This year, Forbes is reporting that the four members of One Direction will earn an incredible $110 million, so who wouldn’t want some of that now that there is no heir apparent? The market is open…so where are all the boy bands?

With the world’s most popular boy band out of the picture for the time being, it is likely only a matter of time before another act springs up and attempts to become the next big thing, and surely there are a number of groups being put together as I write. The boy band industry can be lucrative, but it is also a very tough one to break into. In fact, while there have been a few lucky groups here and there that have managed a hit or two, there hasn’t been a real breakout success story in America since ‘N Sync or the Backstreet Boys both seemingly ruled the world over a decade ago, but that certainly won’t stop people in power from trying.

The U.K. has seen its fair share of male-fronted vocal groups in the past few years, and though none of them were as massive as fellow Brits One Direction, the public seems to be much more open to the idea of boy bands than here in the States. Other countries, especially Asian markets, also see boy bands perform exceptionally well commercially, and yet it might be some time before the U.S. is treated to (or forced to endure, depending on how you feel about the music) another One Direction-style group. Even if a catchy single by a brand new act was sent to radio tomorrow, these things still take time to pick up steam in such a large country.

A lack of superstar talent isn’t only happening to male singing groups these days. Aside from Fifth Harmony, there is a serious dearth of girl groups on today’s charts, even though for decades there were dozens of acts, and they were often the got-to hitmakers of their time (which wasn’t that long ago).

Trends and tastes are always changing in the music industry, and it will be interesting to see when (and if) boy bands ever come back into fashion. Perhaps we’ll all just have to wait until One Direction decides to reunite, as they promised their fans they would when the hiatus was first announced.

FORBES: Top-Earning International Celebrities 2016: One Direction, Cristiano Ronaldo And Adele Bank Big

By Natalie Robehmed, JUL 13, 2016 @ 09:47 AM

From Adele and Akshay Kumar to Usain Bolt and U2, more than a third of the Celebrity 100 hail from outside of the United States. Some are popular worldwide, others are little-known outside their countries and categories, but each foreigner is among the highest-earning entertainers and athletes on earth.

Forbes has scoured the globe to tally the paychecks of front-of-camera talent. This year, 37% of the members of the Celebrity 100 hail from outside the United States, up from 32% last year. Of those, 14 carry British citizenship, more than any nation other than the U.S. Together, the international list members earned a combined $1.9 billion pretax–and they show no sign of slowing down.

“Why this side is yours, this side is mine? Who designed the boundary?” asked Chinese actor Jackie Chan, who banked $61 million. ”I think the world belongs to us. America belongs to me. China belongs to you.”

One Direction may have agreed with Chan’s global ambition. Though the boyband are now on hiatus, they are this year’s highest earning international stars, banking $110 million pretax from the final dates of their continent-spanning On The Road Again tour. The British boy band are $22 million ahead of next-highest international Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo ($88 million) and third-highest foreigner, footballer Lionel Messi ($81.5 million).

Musicians comprise the majority of internationals on the list, with 17 global singers, bands and DJs making the cut. One Direction and U.K. songstress Adele, who earned more than half of her $80.5 million from music sales, are joined by DJ Calvin Harris ($63 million) and aging bands such as Rolling Stones, Muse and U2. Even K-Pop makes a showing with South Korean boyband Bigbang, who raked in $44 million to bank more than Maroon 5. Most of these artists minted money from tours; many sold out arenas en route to cashing checks.

Variety Latino: Liam Payne, de One Direction, firma contrato como solista

By Eliana Lopez | JULY 21, 2016 | 12:48PM PT
